Chaos in imitation relics industry

The imitation relics industry covers jade, porcelain, bronzes, paintings and many other categories.

The imitation relics industry covers jade, porcelain, bronzes, paintings and many other categories.

Reports show that the imitation relics industry has pervaded over 10 provinces in China, with 95% or more of the products getting classified as a medium or low quality level, People's Daily reported.

The industry covers jade, porcelain, bronzes, paintings and many other categories, according to the Survey of Underground Archaizing Industry.

"Nowadays, most products sold at the antique market are mainly medium or low quality fake ones. High quality imitation goods are very rare to come by, let alone authentic relics," Wu Shu, a cultural scholar and the author of the China Cultural Relics Black Book said after visiting the imitation mills several times.

"There is no clear definition on whether or not the acts of imitation violate laws and whether or not archaizing is punishable. However, it being legal does not imply it doesn't cause any harm," Wu said, adding that the high imitation artifacts of Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty porcelains produced in the city of Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, hold the same composition as the authentic ones. They could not be distinguished from their original counterparts, not even through high-tech measures.

He suggested that more grassroots experts should be absorbed into the accreditation bodies, with a variety of scientific instruments introduced to the identification process. This way the authorities could establish private antique transaction accreditation bodies at several levels, all bearing the aim to significantly reduce the circulation of fake relics.
