A survey by Tsinghua University has found that more than 60 percent of college graduates surveyed hope to work in government departments and state-owned enterprises, with only 4 percent aiming to start their own business, Guangming Daily reported.

The survey also revealed that, in 2010, almost 70 percent of college graduates secured a starting salary of less than 2,000 yuan per month and only 3 percent earned more than 5,000 yuan.

Graduates taking jobs in central and northeastern China received lower starting salaries than their peers in eastern and western China, according the survey.

In addition, it found that English skills and sociability may help boost graduates' starting salary, while credits and internships are of no help in this aspect.
