German diving team expect they can do a better job in Beijing than in the Athens Olympics four years ago, head coach said in Beijing on Monday.
The Germany team held their first training session Monday morning in the National Acquatics Center, known as the Water Cube.
"We want to win two medals here," said Peter Lutz, the head coach of the Germany team. "One more than Athens. Two is good. We have a good team and we had a good training camp at Xi'an."
Germany claimed a silver in the men's 3m springboard synchronized in Athens by Andreas Wels and Tobias Schellenberg.
"I think our best chance is in synchro," said Lutz. "We have qualified for all four events in diving, and not all nations have done that. It is very good for our nation."
Sascha Klein, winner of the men's 10m platform at the "Good Luck Beijing" FINA Diving World Cup last February in Beijing, is Germany's top medal contender. He also partnered with Patrick Housding to take the silver of the 10m platform synchro in the World Cup.
"I think they will be very successful," said Lutz. "But we have many arch rivals. The Chinese, the Russians, Britain's Thomas Daley and American Thomas Finchum are all quite strong."
Lutz said diving in China gave him different feelings.
"Diving is a very famous sport in China. It's good for our sport having may spectators, and the atmosphere is good. In Germany, we have not so many spectators."
"The pool is very good," added Lutz. "The diving boards are very soft, not too hard."
