Malaysian ace shuttler Lee Chongwei locked his target at the Olympic gold medal Tuesday, trying to break the jinx on men's singles top seeds at the previous four Olympic Games.
"None of the top seeds at previous Olympics had ever won the gold medal for mens' singles, and I hope this time could be different," said Lee, seeded No. 2 at the Beijing Olympics.
As the best hope for Malaysia to break the awkward record of zero gold at Olympics, Lee said all the nine shuttlers to take part in the competition will try their best to win a gold, which was set as a goal by the Malaysian Olympic Committee.
Lee, However, admitted that his current form is not as good as that in the Thomas Cup in June, at which he downed the world No. 1 Lin Dan from China in the semifinal.
The Beijing Olympic badminton competitions will be held at Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium, where No. 2 seed Lee was pitted against "giant killer" Ronald Susilo from Singapore in his first match on Aug. 11.
