No politics in sports: UN envoy
Adjust font size:

The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative on sports Wilfried Lemke stressed on Tuesday that the Beijing Olympic Games should not be disturbed by political issues and he wants to see the world event a success.

"What politics cannot solve, you can be sure sportsmen cannot solve," said Lemke at a press conference.

The German took office in April as Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace.

Lemke said he would attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games on Aug. 8.

Both he and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon want to have successful games in Beijing, he stressed.
