Lhasa residents celebrate torch relay

Mount Qomolangma is in the south of the Tibet Autonomous region. The Olympic flame's successful journey to the summit has thrilled the locals in Lhasa.

The Olympic flame's successful journey to the summit has thrilled the locals in Lhasa.

Lhasa resident Qi Yunhua said, "We are very happy. We feel proud for China and will cheer for the Olympics."

Lhasa resident Ma Shiming said, "I'm very excited. Different from before, the Olympic torch has made this climb a sacred one."

A Lhasa resident said, "Many of the climbers are Tibetans. They are great! It's really a glory for all Tibetans and the Olympic Games."

Monks from the local Drepung Monastery went to Potala Square on Thursday morning.

Ngawang Qoizin, director of Drepung Monastery Mgmt. office, said, "Today is a day to celebrate for all people in the world. The Olympic Torch has successfully reached the peak of the mountain; this is a proud thing for all Chinese people. As a religious person, I feel very happy. I bless the torch relay and pray for world peace."

Tudan Tanzen, living Buddha of Drepung Monastery, said, "This is really worth celebrating not only for Tibetans, but for all people in China as well as in the world. This wasn't an easy task. I am very excited. I want to take this opportunity to pray for prosperity for our country, for peace, stability and also a good life in Tibet."
