Britain added to its Paralympic Cycling Track gold medal and world record tally when Anthony Kappes and his pilot Barney Storey bettered their earlier world best by half a second in the Men's BV&I 1-3 1km Time Trial on Monday, September 8.
Starting as the last of 32 entrants, they'd seen the Paralympic record broken no less than five times in as many rides and, as they set off, they knew that to take the gold they had to improve on the time of the Australian pairing of Michael Demery and his pilot Shaun Hopkins who'd set the latest Paralympic best under 1:040, just short of the world record.
Blasting away from the start, the British pair was always ahead of the pace and at the end of the four lap race they crossed the line in 1:02.884, trimming 0.463 off their previous world best set at the 2007 Paralympic Cycling World Championships in Bordeaux, France.
A sizeable crowd of Great Britain team supporters screamed with delight as their heroes crossed the line, forcing their Australian opponents into silver and bronze medal positions.
Demery's ride had already pushed his team mate and Individual Pursuit gold medalist Kieran Modra and his pilot Tyson Lawrence into second place. Kappes and Storey just upped the ante and Modra has been rewarded with bronze.
