Life less than glamorous for Thai ladyboys

Today, most of the ladyboys were born into poor families. Some were taken at around two years of age to special school, where they were trained in women’s way of life and – more importantly – received regular doses of female hormones.

The ladyboys who perform in live theaters usually work three shows a day. The best performers can earn about 10,000 Thai Baht (US$326) a month, while most only make several thousand. All must give cuts to the bosses, who treat them as mere tools for profit. Many of the ladyboy performers resort to other means for money during their free time, such as the sex industry.

The ladyboys are discriminated against in Thailand: though the law regards them as men, few treat them like actual human being.
