The People's Liberation Army (PLA) navy's missile destroyer "Yancheng" (pennant number 546) belongs to the made-in-China Type 054A missile destroyer which entered service officially in 2012. Equipped with advanced weapons and an optimally-designed fleet body, the frigate incorporates the sharing of information resources and comprehensive control of weapons, as well as multi-operational functions in terms of power support to the sea, air, and anti-submarine capabilities. It features enhanced comprehensive fighting efficiency. The frigate is currently one of the more advanced combat vessels in China's fleet.
The frigate is 134 meters long, 16 meters wide and 35 meters high. Its full load displacement reaches over 4,000 tons. Equipped with four diesel engines, double propellers and double rudders, its minimum speed is over 27 knots (about 50 km/h), with a cruising speed 18 knots (33.3 km/h), a cruising radius of 4,000 miles (7408 km). It is able to be self-propelled for 15 days and can withstand typhoon-level winds and safely sail into any region except for polar areas.
The main task of the Type 054A frigate focuses on anti-submarine, completing destroyer and frigate formations, attacking the big-and-medium-sized surface ships, preventing air raids and providing fire support, exercising maritime patrol, and providing escorts.
After entering service, the frigate's crew studied and drilled hard, forming an excellent overall operational capability. Crew members also completed major training programs including the "shark hunting", "hawk hunting" series, as well as live ammunition, eventually achieving recognition as the "top standard among the fleet".
