Run Run Shaw (R) and Runme Shaw (L). The two started Shaw Brothers Studio in Singapore in 1930, and decided to produce talking pictures. Run Run Shaw once found himself in a ship disaster when on route to the U.S. to buy talkie equipment. He managed to survive by clinging to the wreckage. Nevertheless, the tragedy still came to a happy ending when the studio produced its first Chinese talkie in 1931, which won back 60 times its cost in box offices in Guangzhou City alone. [163.com]
