The winters in Hetian are long. Farmers have little farm work to do during this season and therefore come to dig for jade in the Kashi River bed. Sometimes they take the regular bus at 7:00 a.m. to the mine; sometimes they rent a truck together. The truck in the picture is also used for jade stone transport.
