Editor's note: Nanjing: "The place of southern beauty, the state of the Jinling Emperor." As a city with over 6,000 years of history that has also been a capital for more than 2,600 years, Nanjing is one of the four ancient Chinese capitals and an important birthplace of Chinese civilization. Dr. Sun Yat-sen once said that Nanjing is an ancient Chinese city older than Beijing. It is located in a wonderful place that is home to high mountains, deep waters and broad plains. It is one of the only cities that contain all three such landforms. This series of old photos preserved by former Nationalist government staff shows the changes that have taken place in Nanjing in the past century.
