Japan golden in women's figure skating at Universiade

Japanese Yukari Nakano survived a fall in free skate to capture women's title at the Winter Universiade on Tuesday.

Her compatriot Nana Takeda stood the second at 152.91 while Kiira Korpi of Finland, who led the previous day's the short program, scored 148.22 to settle for bronze.

To the music of Giselle by Adolphe Adam, Nakano, gold winner of the 2007 Asian Winter Games and fourth of the 2008 World Championships, started with a triple axel, followed by a triple flip and double toeloop, posting an overall total score of 154.63 after the two-leg event.

Korpi, bronze medalist of the 2007 European Championships and fifth of the 2009 European Championships, messed up her landing after a triple lutz and double toeloop, and was left lamenting for the bronze.

Later on, five teams of Sweden, the United States, Switzerland, Finland and Russia will compete in free skate of synchronized skating to decide the final gold of the Universiade figure skating, which is to conclude on Tuesday evening.
