The day also saw Osasuna assure its place in the Primera Liga next season with a 3-1 win over Deportivo La Coruna.

Camunas, Pandiani and Juanfran notched Osasuna' s goals before halftime and Deportivo showed little interest in fighting back in the second period.

Tuesday' s games saw Juan Mata score trice and David Silva add a third to help Valencia beat bottom of the table Xerez 3-1.

Almeria assured its Primera Liga future with a 4-2 win at home to Villarreal. Uche scored twice for the home side, who almost let the visitors back into the game as Villarreal climbed back to 3-2 before Piatti' s deciding goal.

Finally Roberto Soldado scored an overhead kick to give Getafe a point at home to Sporting Gijon. The draw is a help to a Sporting side still Bottling to avoid relegation.
