Real Madrid Director of Sport, Jorge Valdano assured that there would be changes at the club this summer after his club ended the season with no trophies for the second year in succession.

Real Madrid spent a record 250 million Euros (around 300 million U.S. dollars) on players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzama, but ended up finishing second to FC Barcelona in the race for the Primera Liga title.

The club also crashed out in the first round in the Copa del Rey and failed to get past the first knockout round of the Champions League. Even though it finished with a club record of 96 points in the league, Real Madrid's season has to be considered as a huge failure and Valdano promises changes in the future.

Speaking to sports paper Marca, he was asked if the summer would see a new coach and more big name signings.

"Both things," he replied. "This project began last year and there were a lot of changes and this year there will also be new incorporations," he said, before congratulating FC Barcelona on its success.

Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini last Friday dropped big hints that he expects to be sacked now the season is over and Valdano said little to change that opinion.

"Regarding the coach, now we will open a debate and we will see what decision is taken. We have a lot of time and we will see what direction we will take," he said.

Valdano refused to see whether Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho would be the man to replace Pellegrini.

"Mourinho has other battles at the moment," is all he would say.
