Andrew Ushakov held on to mark Russia's first Youth Olympic Games gold medal, winning the youth men's 200 meters freestyle at Singapore Sports School in Singapore on Monday.
Ushakov clocked 1 minute 49.81 seconds to edge out a strong-finishing Cristian Quintero from Venezuela by 0.17 seconds in a thrilling final lap.
Ushakov took over the lead from Quintero early in the second lap. Heading into the final 50m, the Russian held nearly a one-second advantage but that margin was reduced by Quintero and Jeremy Bagshaw of Canada, who finished in 1:49.98 and 1:50.67 respectively to claim silver and bronze.
