Xu Zhengyang of China will rely on building a quick relationship with his drawn horse at the Youth Olympic Games to make up for his lack of preparation coming into the equestrian event.
The 17-year-old has been busy with his studies and only had time to ride twice a week in the lead up to the Games.
The academic Xu first rode at the age of six, but it wasn't until 2008 under the encouragement of his father and coach Xu Genfa, head of the Shanghai Equestrian Centre, that he start riding competitively.
Like his father, who was involved in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games as an equestrian judge and bearer of the torch relay, Xu shares the passion in embracing the Olympic experience.
He enjoys participating in the activities held at the Youth Olympic Village, trading pins and trying to improve his English.
