Brazil's legendary basketball icon Oscar Schmidt received a huge honor on Friday as the athlete was named to the 2010 FIBA list of athletes to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Schmidt began his career with the Brazilian national team in 1977, playing until the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. In 326 games for the national team, Schmidt scored 7,693 points. The class of 2010 will be inducted on September 12 in Turkey, just days before the 2010 World Championships of basketball tip off.
At the end of the competition, each of the 17 players, coaches and assistants that will enter the Hall of Fame this year will receive a special homage at the end of the competition.
Schmidt will be Brazil's fourth athlete to enter the FIBA Hall of Fame. Previous inductees include Amaruy Pasos, Hortencia Marcari and head coach Togo Renan, leading Brazil to two World Championships.
In his career with the national team, Schmidt won the bronze medal at the World Championships of 1978, the gold medal in the 1987 Pan-American Games, and three titles in the South American tournament, winning in 1977, 1983 and 1985.
During his respective performance in the Olympic Games, Schmidt scored 1,093 points in five appearances. The achievement earned him an Olympic Order Award, presented by the International Olympic Committee.
Despite the news of his FIBA Hall of Fame induction, Schmidt openly declared that he hopes to one day be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in Springfield, Illinois, USA.
