Jose Mourinho's first league game as Real Madrid coach ended with a disappointing draw 0-0 in Mallorca on Sunday.
The new Real coach watched his side create several excellent chances to take all three points only to miss all of them in a frustrating night.
Mourinho announced the day before the game that young midfielder Sergio Canales would make his Real Madrid league debut in the newly renamed Iberostar Stadium and the Portuguese coach was true to his word.
Canales lined up alongside fellow new arrival Angel di Maria, while Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira began the match on the bench along with Karim Benzema.
Mourinho's side began by controlling the game, but apart from two shots from Cristiano Ronaldo, chances were few and far between as the game began to be broken up by a series of fouls in midfield.
Real Madrid's only other first half chance was a free kick taken by Xabi Alonso that was cleared by Mallorca keeper Dudu Aouate.
Di Maria began the second half looking to open up the Mallorca defense, but once again Ronaldo was the main threat for Real Madrid and Mourinho decided to make a double change on the hour with Benzema and Ozil coming into the action for the winger and Canales, who had struggled to make an impact.
The change sparked some life into Madrid and Gonzalo Higuain saw a chance saved by Aouate before Ronaldo once again saw another chance frustrated by the Mallorca keeper.
Ozil also tried to impose his quality, but on two occasions his final ball went astray, before Ronaldo's frustration finally got the better of him and the winger was booked for unsporting behavior.
His frustration was similar to that of his side and Real Madrid begin the new season as they ended the old one -- behind FC Barcelona, who began their campaign with a 3-0 win in Santander.
