Robin Soderling survived first set down to advance into last eight at U.S. Open and Novak Djokovic enjoyed an dominant victory over American Mardy Fish in straight sets to reach quarterfinals at Flushing Meadow on Monday.

Swedish fifth seed Soderling took a set to get started before rolling Spain's Albert Montanes 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 to book into the quarterfinals for a second consecutive year.

Djokovic, the 2007 finalist, fired 30 winners as he overwhelmed Fish 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 to set up a U.S. Open quarterfinal with flamboyant Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Monfils was equally impressive in a straight-set crushing of countryman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5, 7-5, reaching the U.S. Open last eight for the first time in his career.

He is the first French quarter-finalist since Arnaud Clement in 2000.

Soderling, a popular dark-horse pick because of his past success against Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, only faced one break point against him, which Montanes converted to win the first set. Soderling dominated the next three sets, breaking Montanes five times.

He beat Federer in the quarters of the French Open to end Federer's record run of 23 straight semifinals in Grand Slam events.

He is one of only two players with victories over both Federer and Nadal at Grand Slam events.
