Kenyan Hillary Kimayo and Mexican Karina Perez won on Sunday the 28th International Marathon of Mexico City, which attracted about 17,000 marathoners from 15 countries.
Kimayo established a new record of two hours, 12 minutes and 18 seconds, breaking the one of 2:13.06 he established in the past. He was followed by Mexican Heriberto Mendez with 2:21.34.
Meanwhile, Peres finished the route of 42 kilometers within 2:38, followed by Mexicans Jacqueline Orellana who timed 2:54.06 and Judith Ramirez in third place.
The winners got a prize of about 3 million Mexican pesos (230,000 U.S. dollars) and a car. For breaking the record, Kimayo got an extra prize of 100,000 pesos (7,633 dollars).
The Mexico City marathon also included the half-marathon and 5,000 meters runs, as well as short races for children.
