Kang, who also teed off on 10, was one of the pre-tournament favourites going into the 53rd edition of the historic event. Fourth in August's Thailand Open on OneAsia, the 23-year-old lived up to his billing with a bogey-free round featuring birdies on 18, three, five and nine.

"I didn't used to really like this course, but did well last year, finishing ninth, and hit my driver really well today," said Kang, who won April's Eugene Open on the Korean Tour. "It's a long course, so you need to hit it long and it's working for me so far."

Yang, the 2006 champion, recorded a triple-bogey on his second hole, the par-four 11th. A bogey on 12 and a double on 17 were offset by birdies on 15, four and five.

"I hit the ball well off the tee and found the fairways well, but hit some fliers with my second shots early on," said the 38-year-old, who won the US$2.5 million Volvo China Open on OneAsia in April.

"Some of my iron shots were way off. I tried to make it up on the front nine, but it was a lot of ground to make up."

The Kolon Korea Open is the seventh tournament on this year's OneAsia schedule and will be followed by the Midea China Classic in Shunde from October 14-17.

The Kolon Korea Open will be showcased on OneAsia's television platform with live coverage for four hours a day across all four tournament days and broadcast to over 260 million homes in more than 40 countries.

Full coverage of the event will be available domestically on SBS Golf Channel, as well as internationally on ESPN Star Sports, Jupiter Golf Network, Fox International, Network Ten, Sky Sports NZ, ESPN3 and America One in the USA, and ViaSat and Bloomberg Television among others in Europe.
