Co-host ready to goAs a co-host city of the upcoming 16th Asian Games, the Pearl River Delta city of Dongguan has prepared well for the competition. "Different government departments, including the public security, sanitation, fire prevention, food safety, environmental protection, traffic, water and power supply, have been involved in the operation work. The city government has launched several rehearsals to make sure that the competitions will go on smoothly," Wu Daowen said at a press conference in Guangzhou on Wednesday. Wu is the vice-mayor of Dongguan and executive director of the coordinating committee of the city's Asian Games venue. The weightlifting competition will take place from Nov 13 to 19 in Dongguan, which is about 70 kilometers away from the Guangzhou Asian Games Village. A total of 208 athletes - 133 male and 75 female - will compete for medals, eight for males and seven for females. Wu said the local government has mapped out a special traffic control program to make sure athletes will be able to arrive at Dongguan Gym within 45 minutes under any circumstances while minimizing the traffic impact on local citizens. The program includes measures to ban trucks with loads greater than 5 tons from the Dongguan leg of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, setting up a priority lane from the exit of the expressway to Dongguan Gym and implementing traffic control around the gym during the competition period from early in the morning until late at night. Dongguan is the birthplace of Chen Jingkai, a famous weightlifter who broke the world record in the men's 56 kg category in 1956, and Shilong township is a training base for the nation's weightlifters. |
