Liu Xin won the gold medal in the women's points race in the Guangzhou Velodrome on Tuesday in a final marred by two crashes.

Liu lapped the field and controlled the final stages of the race to take home the gold medal with 34 points. Hong Konger Wong Wan Yiu, despite crashing, finished with 27 points to claim the silver medal. Chanpeng Nontasin of Thailand claimed 25 points to win bronze.

The first crash, between the second and third sprints, brought down a number of riders including Japan's Mayuko Hagiwara. All the riders later rejoined the race.

Between the third and fourth sprints Liu, Wong, Diao Xiao Juan of Hong Kong, Notasin and Nontasin and Na Ahreum of South Korea managed to escape and lap the main bunch, each recording 20 points.

Midway through the race, the second crash brought down a large number of riders, including Hagiwara, Wong and China's Tang Kerong.

Hagiwara and Tang were stretchered out of the velodrome, while Wong managed to rejoin the race.

Despite her involvement in the crash, Wong managed to complete the race and hang on to silver.

Wong received her silver medal with tears rolling down her face. In obvious pain, she was unable to hold the bouquet aloft with the other medalists and had to be taken from the velodrome in a wheelchair.

"The rib hurts," said Wong, "but I really cherish the silver as the event would be cancelled in the future, so the silver of the event would be the last medal I can get."
