Cape Town - Sport24 readers have voiced their opinions in emphatic fashion regarding the blowing of vuvuzelas at sporting events in South Africa.

In a poll conducted on the Sport24 site, 42% of the 7 998 votes received were in favour of having vuvuzelas banned immediately from all sporting events.

A further 34% suggested they were happy to see - and hear - them played at soccer matches only, while 24% believe they add to the vibe inside stadiums and would like to hear them blown at all sporting events in the country.

In a similar poll on the News24 website, the ratio was a staggering 61-39% in favour of banning vuvuzelas from all Soccer World Cup stadiums.

The playing of vuvuzelas at SWC matches has drawn widespread criticism from all corners of the globe with, among others, Portugal star midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo and seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong both confirming they are no fans of the plastic horn.

The vuvuzela's prominence at the SWC was mentioned on ESPN sporting shows Around the Horn and Pardon the Interruption and reference was even made to it during Game 6 of the NBA Finals between the LA Lakers and Boston Celtics.

However, one of the vuvuzela's biggest fans appears to be Ernie Els, who suggested he'd like to hear fans blowing the trumpet down the fairways of Pebble Beach, scene of this week's US Open.
