Spain’s Alvaro Quiros has won the Dubai Desert Classic sealing his fifth and biggest victory on the European Tour by one shot from South African James Kingston and Dane Anders Hansen.
The Spaniard finished on 11-under but endured a most bizarre round on the final day. He needed binoculars to find his ball after losing it up a tree following a wayward tee shot on the eighth.
The win represented the biggest payday in Quiros' career. |
After the triple-bogey he earned at eight, the Spaniard holed an incredible hole-in-one on the 11th to restore his lead.
All eyes were on the big three over the weekend – Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Tiger Woods – but they failed to trouble the leaders on the last day and finished back in 15th, 31st and 20th respectively.
Westwood and Woods were still in contention going into the last round, but failed to make an impact when the wind got up on the final day.
