Ding Junhui has emerged victorious from a rollercoaster first round tie with Scotland's Marcus Campbell in the first round of the Welsh Open in Newport.

The Chinese number one eventually scraped home 4-3 but not before coming from behind and being clawed back by the world number 31.

World number four Ding survived a tough test to overcome Scotland's Marcus Campbell.

Ding came back from 0-2 down to take the lead at 3-2 before Campbell leveled to force a tense final frame decider. Ding capitalized on a poor safety shot from Campbell to clear in the final frame and now moves on to the last-16.

It was a high-quality match with clearances of 51, 63, 103 and 125.

The tournament is piloting a new format of best of seven frames with no interval and Ding said after the match that he is a fan of the new quick fire format.

"I prefer not to have an interval," said the Chinese. "It makes it more like practice when you are playing all the time with no breaks."

Ding is set to face either Mark Allen or Rod Lawler in the last-16.
