The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has opened disciplinary proceedings against a Chinese judge for violating the sport's ethical code and judging rules.
Shao Bin, a Chinese judge on the Difficulty panel, was caught falsifying a score during the Men's Artistic Floor Final at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou in November 2010,. Shao modified a score prior to its release without informing either the head Execution judge or the Superior Jury, according to FIG.
Shao's action meant Chinese gymnast Zhang Chenglong moved from second to first place, equal with Kim Soo Myun of Korea, but with a score that put Zhang in a favorable position for the tie break.
FIG described Shao's behavior as wholly unacceptable, and decided to take severe action against him. The case is now in the hands of the FIG Disciplinary Commission.
Both Shao and the Chinese Gymnastics Association were informed as of the decision on March 10, 2011.
Shao is an international gymnastic judge and a PhD advisor hired by Shanghai University of Sports.
