The worst sports-related tragedy in United States history occurred on November 14th, 1970, when a DC-9 plane carrying 75 people connected to the Marshall University football team crashed near Huntington, West Virginia. There were no survivors.
Among the losses were nearly the entire Marshall University football team, coaches, flight crew, numerous fans, and supporters.
The tragedy left a deep imprint, and remains part of the collective memory of Marshall University. An annual ceremony to remember those who died in the crash is held at the campus memorial near the Marshall Student Center. The memorial is a bronze-and-copper fountain with 75 separate jets of water in honor of the 75 who perished.
The crash was the subject of the 2006 movie, “We Are Marshall,” which told the story of the accident and the recovery of the university’s football program.
