Zhou Lulu of China set an aggregate world record to win the gold medal in the women's super heavyweight category at the world weightlifting championships in Paris yesterday, the last day of the competition.
Zhou lifted 146 kilograms in the snatch session and 182kg in the clean and jerk for a 328kg total to beat the previous mark of 327kg set by Tatiana Kashirina of Russia at the European championships in April.
Kashirina managed 147kg to break her own world record in the snatch but could not match Zhou in the clean and jerk. The European champion had to settle for silver with a combined 322kg.
Olha Korobka of Ukraine finished a distant third with a 284kg total.
On Saturday, Ilya Ilyin of Kazakhstan won the men's 94kg division when Artem Ivanov of Ukraine failed at a world record attempt.
Ivanov's last clean and jerk was for a total of 413kg that would have beaten the world record of 412kg set by Akakios Kakhiasvilis of Greece in 1999.
Olympic champion Ilyin lifted 181kg in the snatch and 226kg in the clean and jerk for a combined 407kg.
Ivanov totaled 407kg, too, but had to settle for silver like last year because he was 160 grams heavier than Ilyin. Saeid Mohammadpour Karkaragh of Iran took third with a 402kg total.
Earlier, European champion Khadzhimurat Akkaev of Russia hoisted 198kg in the snatch, two units shy of the world record, and 232kg in the clean and jerk for a combined 430kg to win the men's 105kg category.
His compatriot Dmitry Klokov, an Olympic silver medalist, took silver with a 428kg total. Oleksiy Torokhtiy of Ukraine finished a distant third with a combined 410.
