Peng Shuai of China in action during her fourth round match against Maria Kirilenko. |
Peng Shuai failed to get past the fourth round of a Grand Slam once again as China's last remaining hope at Wimbledon was knocked out in three sets by Maria Kirilenko on Monday.
The 30th seeded Peng hung on in the match in a second-set tie-break but the 17th seeded Kirilenko broke twice in the final set for a 6-1, 6-7 (8/6), 6-3 win in two hours and 20 minutes.
Kirilenko moves on to face Polish third seed Agnieszka Radwanska in what will be the Russian's second-ever Grand Slam quarter-final.
Peng, 26, the Chinese number three behind Li Na and Zheng Jie, has now reached the last 16 of a Grand Slam four times, without ever going further.
Kirilenko stormed through Peng in a first set of complete dominance, clinching the set with three breaks.
Peng came out a vastly different player in the second set as she looked to get back in the match and improve on last year's fourth round performance at Wimbledon. Both players broke serve twice to eventually move into a tiebreaker. Peng hit an impressive backhand cross-court winner to send the match into a third set but couldn't keep her momentum going once there.
Kirilenko broke for a 3-2 lead in the final set and broke again to win the match when Peng sent a shot wide.
