The half a medal stands for the athletes who won in pairs or groups or were so-called exchanging players, registering with one sports bureau whilst playing for another.
The list of the gold medalists from different provinces plays a very subtle role in next year's National Games, which are considered to be a platform for the selection of the 2016 Olympic athletes, according to sina.com.cn.
During the previous two editions of the National Games, host provinces Jiangsu (in 2005) and Shandong (in 2009) rose to the top positions on the gold medal list of the Beijing (2008) and London (2012) Olympics, respectively. The 2013 National Games will take place in Liaoning Province.
Because of China's state-funded athletic training system, this provincial listing of gold medals is often a post-Olympic topic highlighted by the country's own media.
The rest of the top 10 provinces and municipalities, in terms of their gold medal count, include Sichuan, Shanghai and Fujian.
Aside from their gold medal inventory, Shandong, Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces also occupied the top three positions in the overall medal tally, though Zhejiang had to share its third place with Jiangsu Province.
