South Korean Lee Sang-hwa broke the women's 500 meters speedskating world record at the World Cup stop in Calgary, Canada, on Sunday with a time of 36.80 seconds.

Lee, who notched her eighth victory in eight World Cup races this season at the distance, sliced 14-hundredths off the previous record of 36.94 set by China's Yu Jing at the world sprint championships on the same Calgary Olympic oval on January 29, 2012. Yu was the first woman to break the 37-second barrier.
