Cleveland Cavaliers' Brazilian center Anderson Varejao has been ruled out for the rest of the NBA season with a blood clot in his right lung.
The 30-year-old developed the condition after entering a Cleveland hospital on Thursday for surgery on his injured right knee.
"I have spoken with the doctors and they have helped me to relax," Varejao told Brazilian daily Estado de S. Paulo on Monday. "The treatment isn't complicated or painful. I will make a complete recovery and feel 100% in a few weeks."
Varejao was initially expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks after suffering a knee injury during the Cavaliers' 113-99 defeat to the Toronto Raptors on December 18.
After an injury-ravaged two years, Varejao was one of the form big men of the competition this season, averaging 14.1 points and 14.4 rebounds a game.
"I'm sad that I can't play but I have to look at the bright side and think about returning as soon as possible," he said.
Varejao missed 51 games in 2010-2011 with a torn ligament in his foot and 41 games last season after breaking his wrist.
