Defending Russian Premier League champions FC Zenit St. Petersburg have produced one of their strongest performances so far this season to topple down England's Liverpool 2-0 in the first leg of their round of 32 UEFA Europa League tie.

After a goalless first half, two goals in three minutes from Brazilian striker Hulk and substitute Sergei Semak sealed the result for Zenit, and ensured that Liverpool will have an uphill battle to make it through to the next round.

The return leg is set for Liverpool's hallowed Anfield on February 21. An early away goal for the Russian club will leave Liverpool needing to strike four times to progress to the last 16.
