Oscar Pistorius weeps in court as he is charged in court with the murder of his girlfriend. |
Detained paralympian Oscar Pistorius' management company on Friday disputed the alleged murder charges against the Blade Runner "in the strongest terms".
"Oscar Pistorius has appeared in court here in Pretoria this morning formally charged with the murder of Reeva Steenkamp. The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms," the company said on Pistorius' official website.
It is not clear weather the statement is communicating Pistorius's official position although it clear states that "he would like to express his thanks through us".
The South African double amputee has been under police custody since Thursday when he was arrested for allegedly shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his Pretoria home.
On Friday he appeared briefly at the Pretoria Magistrate Court, which was packed with local and international media.
"These are now live and active legal proceedings which must be allowed to take their course through the process of proper investigation by the police, evidence-gathering and through the local South African judicial system," the company said.
During the short court hearing, Pistorius lawyers asked for a postponement for a bail application until Tuesday next week. The lawyers requested the postponement to give them time to do their own investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy.
The magistrate agreed but ruled that Pistorius be held in custody at a local police station.
Pistorius, 26, has made history as an Olympic and Paralympic sportsman. A national hero in South Africa, Pistorius ran in 11 races during the 2012 Games and the Paralympics. He returned home with two Paralympic gold medals, Paralympic silver, two world records, a Paralympic record, an Olympic individual semi-final and an Olympic final.
Pistorius was named by Time Magazine last year as one of the world's 100 most influential people.
