Former England captain David Beckham, 37, will act as international ambassador for the Chinese Super League (CSL) starting this season, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

The CSL has sent an invitation letter to Beckham for its new season's opening ceremony which will take place on March 8.

The superstar footballer has signed a five-month contract with French top club Paris St. Germain, which is scheduled to play Valencia in the second leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League on March 7. This would leave Beckham limited time to attend the CSL new season's opening ceremony.

An insider with the CSL noted that even if Beckham is unable to attend, he will still be the league's ambassador.
