Thanks to a 2-0 home win over Pohang Steelers, Beijing Guoan are now one point away from last 16 of the 2013 AFC Champions League.
At Workers' Stadium on Tuesday, more than 30,000 fans witnessed Beijing Guoan's first ever victory over a South Korean side. The victory moves Beijing ahead of Pohang in the Group G standings with one round remaining, in which Guoan will meet already eliminated Sanfrecce Hiroshima while Pohang will entertain Bunyodkor.
After a lacklustre opening 45 minutes, Joffre Guerron broke the deadlock for the home side three minutes into the second half.
Pohang saw the hopes of equalising after Freddy Kanoute failed to convert Guoan's penalty. However, the former ACL champions' closest chance was when Shin Kwang-hoon's effort from the edge of the area flew across the face of goal.
With three minutes to go, Beijing finally claimed the second goal that wrapped up the three points as the Pohang defence was unable to clear Zhang Xizhe's free kick from the left and Shao swooped to squeeze the ball between goalkeeper and his near post.
