Chelsea forward Eden Hazard has been ruled out of Wednesday's Europa League final against Benfica, coach Rafael Benitez confirmed during a press conference in Amsterdam.
The 22-year-old Belgian Hazard was been unable to recover in time from a hamstring injury he sustained in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday. "Hazard will not be available," Benitez said.
John Terry suffered an ankle injury against Aston Villa, but might be fit in time. "We will try and see how he feels. We will decide tomorrow," said Benitez.
Last year Terry already missed Chelsea's Champions League final win over Bayern Munich through suspension. "It's not easy for him, " Benitez admitted. "It's not the best injury, but will see tomorrow with the medical staff."
Benfica were beaten 2-1 by FC Porto last Saturday and squandered the lead in the Portuguese league. During the press conference in Amsterdam coach Jorge Jesus said it was not difficult to recover from the blow.
"The match against Porto was important, but has nothing to do with the final," Jesus said. "The fact that we are here now in Amsterdam makes it easy to focus on Chelsea now. The two best teams in the Europa League qualified for the final. Chelsea is favorite, but we are able to win."
Last season Chelsea eliminated Benfica in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, winning both legs 1-0 and 2-1. "We were unlucky last year, but I hope we will be lucky next year," said Jesus.
