Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez (Liverpool) said Thursday he is bent on leaving the British league following the overwhelming amount of bad press he has generated since biting a rival during a match in late April.
"They treated me bad in England, I had a bad time, I suffered a lot, no one defended me. I know I made mistakes and I apologized," Suarez told reporters at a press conference in Montevideo.
"I have a daughter and I have to worry about her and take her out of there," he said, adding "I would like to play in another league."
Suarez shocked fans and players alike when he bit into the arm of Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea) in an April 21 match this year, and was later suspended for 10 matches. He went on to score after the bizarre incident, the second time he has bitten a rival player. He was suspended from seven games in 2010 after biting Otman Bakkal.
Suarez has also gotten into trouble for other misbehavior, including making racist slurs against Patrice Evra (Manchester United) in 2011, for which he was suspended from eight games.
"I have moved on from what happened to me with the racist situation and after that I have been feeling bad and uncomfortable," said Suarez, following a training session with the Uruguayan national soccer team.
Real Madrid has shown an interest in signing up the troublesome player and last Tuesday Suarez indicated he might join the soccer club, telling a local radio station that "saying no to Real Madrid is always difficult."
In other matters, Suarez seconded Diego Lugano, captain of Uruguay's national team, who criticized the team' s performance after its draw against Paraguay and defeat against Chile last March.
Uruguay is in sixth place in the South American qualifying tournament for the Brazil 2014 World Cup, with 13 points, two points below Venezuela, which is in fifth place and its next rival in the playoffs.
Due to a pair of yellow cards, Suarez has been benched from playing in the June 11 match against Venezuela, in the eastern Venezuelan city of Puerto Ordaz, in day 14 of South America's World Cup qualifying tournament.
Uruguay is slated to play a friendly match June 5 against France in Montevideo and will play the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil on June 15.
