Li Na hits a return during her women's singles match against Alize Cornet in the first round of the AEGON International tennis tournament in Eastbourne on Tuesday. |
World No.6 Li Na warms up for Wimbledon with season's first win on grass, brushing aside Alize Cornet in the opening round of Eastbourne International yesterday.
Li, second seed of the tournament, moved into a match-up with Marion Bartoli, a former title holder at the grass event on the English south coast.
"For a first grass-court match it was pretty good. I’m looking forward for tomorrow and another tough match," said Li.
Li might have started her opening match in a slightly jittery fashion, but soon found her rhythm, stepping on the gas whenever she needed. The former French Open winner won the match in straight sets 6-2,6-4, looking largely untroubled all through the course of it.
There were also victories for 2012 runner-up Angelique Kerber of Germany, who defeated Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-4 and fourth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova, who dismissed Romanian Monica Niculescu 6-4, 6-1.
Fifth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark advanced after leading 6-2, 2-2 when defending champion Tamira Paszek of Austria retired with a left thigh injury.
