Earlier in the day, the third seed Maria Sharapova was knocked out by Portugal's qualifier Michelle Larcher De Brito.

Sharapova, the 2004 winner, saved four match points in a thrilling final game before succumbing 6-3, 6-4 to a 20-year-old De Brito, and left the women's draw in tatters after the earlier withdrawal of Azarenka.

Wimbledon's famed grass courts were at the center of a safety storm after Steve Darcis, the conqueror of Rafael Nadal, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Yaroslava Shvedova, John Isner, Radek Stepanek and Marin Cilic joined Azarenka in pulling out.

However, the All England Club defended that the grass was not "dangerous".  "There have been no changes in the preparation of the courts and as far as we are aware the grass surface is in excellent condition. In fact, we believe that it is drier than last year when the prevailing conditions were cold and wet," said the statement.
