Barcelona were unable to break the spell against the German record champions Bayern Munich, three month after they were eliminated 7-0 on aggregate by the Bavarians at the UEFA Champions League.
From the kick off Bayern dictated the pace on the pitch and worked out the first chances of the encounter. Thus, the hosts were rewarded 15 minutes into the match when Phillip Lahm headed home a Franck Ribery cross to break the deadlock.
Barcelona almost responded through Sergi Roberto, who pulled wide under the pressure from Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
It was an evenly balanced first half as both sides lurked for offensive actions. However, Thomas Mueller squandered two opportunities before Barcelonans Cristian Tello lacked in precision just before the break.
With the beginning of the second half the flow of the match declined as Barcelona made eleven substitutions in a row. Consequently, Bayern had the better of the play as Ribery, Thiago Alcantara and Mario Mandzukic came close to double the lead.
Three minutes before final whistle Mario Mandzukic scored the deserved 2-0 lead when he exploited a low cross by Diego Contento from very close range.
The German giant will take on league rivals Borussia Dortmund to play for the Supercup on July 27.
