World football's governing body FIFA will open the application process for its 2014 World Cup volunteer program next month.

Brazil legend and official World Cup ambassador Ronaldo said priority would be given to applicants that speak more than one language.

"During the Confederations Cup [in June], 97% of the fans were from Brazil so there wasn't that necessity," Ronaldo said during an event in Rio on Thursday.

"At the World Cup, there are going to be more Argentinians, Chileans, Americans etcetera. We need people who speak other languages."

The program will be launched in the western city of Cuiaba, one of Brazil's 12 World Cup host cities, on September 9.

Earlier this year the World Cup local organizing committee revealed plans to have a combined one million volunteers for the Confederations Cup and World Cup.
