Judd Trump sent packing by Michael Holt at Shanghai Masters.

World number three Judd Trump suffered a shock 5-1 first-round exit to Michael Holt at the Shanghai Masters.

Trump, last year's finalist of the tournament, looked out of sorts against 35-year-old Holt as he struggled to keep up with the world number 26.

Former world number one Trump has struggled for form this season and has been on the receiving end of similar defeats in the early rounds of tournaments.

After sharing the first two frames, Nottingham's Holt made a break of 115 to take the lead, then crucially won a scrappy 38-minute fourth frame on the colours. He went on to compile runs of 97 and 60 to complete a convincing victory.

"It's frustrating to come such a long way and lose in the first round. Michael deserved to win," said Trump.

Elsewhere, world number one Neil Robertson continued his quest for a third straight tournament win in China with a 5-1 win over Wang Yuchen. Matthew Stevens was another high-profile player who lost in China after a 5-4 defeat to Peter Lines.

In the wild card round, Andrew Higginson suffered a 5-4 reverse against China's Lin Shuai, who took the deciding frame 48-38.
