The final score was 6-2, 6-1, and the match lasted just 46-minutes, delighting fans.
"When I arrived here, they announced that we were going to play doubles together, and there was huge excitement," Federer said. "It is good for the game, good for tennis here in China. The ultimate goal is to partner up with a Chinese up-and-coming player and promote the game at the same time."
Zhang Ze said, "Over the past few days, Federer invited me to practice with him. I learnt a lot from him, not just skills, but also professionalism."
Due to the bad rainy weather on October 7, caused by Typhoon Fitow, outside matches were postponed, leaving October 8 with a busy schedule.
The Shanghai Rolex Masters will also feature Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who rank number one and number two in the ATP ranking, and the tournament is being held from October 6 - 13 at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center in Shanghai. It has been voted ATP Masters 1000 Tournament of the Year from 2009-2012.
Roger Federer is due to play his first singles match at the tournament on October 9.
