Sunderland are poised to sign Argentina international forward Ignacio Scocco from Brazilian club Internacional, local media reported on Monday.

The 28-year-old's agent, Fabian Soldini, has held talks with Sunderland coach Gus Poyet and a deal is expected to be announced by Friday's transfer window deadline, according to Brazilian news site Terra.

"Talks have been ongoing with the English club since last week and Soldini has put a proposal to Sunderland," the report said.

Scocco, who won a solitary Argentina cap in 2012, failed to impress at Internacional after joining from Newell's Old Boys last year. It is understood Sunderland have agreed in principal to a five million US-dollar fee for the player.

According to Internacional's football director Eduardo Lacher, Scocco has made clear his desire to leave.

"Everybody knows that he isn't going to stay and we hope to conclude the sale as quickly as possible," Lacher said earlier on Monday.

Scocco has also reportedly attracted interest from Sunderland's Premier League rivals Cardiff City.

Reports of Scocco's imminent departure come less than a week after Internacional sold Uruguay striker Diego Forlan to Japan's Cerezo Osaka.
