Venus Williams, the world's number 48th in the women's ATP world ranking, defeated on Monday world' s number 33rd ranked Elena Vesvina from Russia 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the 22nd Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
"It is wonderful to be here, I get great support from the audience," the older sister of world's number one Serena Williams said.
In the other women's first matches on the first day of the tournament, Lucie Safarova from the Czech Republic was victorious over Sloane Stephens of the United States 6-3, 7-5. Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro defeated Nadia Patrova of Russia 6-3. 6-2.
Alisia Kleybanova from Russia defeated her compatriot Ekatarina Makarova in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 and 6-4.
