Serena Williams booked her spot in the third round of Madrid Open with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Peng Shuai.

World number one Serena Williams cruised into the last 16 of the Madrid Open on Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-3 thrashing of China's Peng Shuai.

Top seed Williams, who stayed on course for a third straight Madrid Open title, lost just one point on serve as she eased through the opening set.

Peng showed more resistence in the second, but couldn't convert on two break points and Williams needed just one chance to seal the only break of the set before serving out the match to set up a third round meeting with Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.

Elsewhere, fourth seed Simona Halep also progressed to the last 16 in straight sets as she clinched a 6-4 6-4 victory over Lara Arruabarrena.

Former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki failed to reach the last 16 after she was defeated 6-3 6-3 by Italian veteran Roberta Vinci.

In the men's Masters tournament, top seed Rafael Nadal lost just one game against Juan Monaco in 6-1 6-0 victory to reach the third round.

Sixth seed Thomas Berdych stretched his perfect record against South African Kevin Anderson to 11-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win.
