Unheralded Zhang Shuai knocked off Petra Kvitova in one of the upsets of the tournament in Rome on Tuesday.

A back-and-forth battle on Tuesday saw Zhang Shuai edge fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova for her 300th professional win and the biggest upset of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia so far.

The 25-year-old Chinese notched her second career top ten win by finding her way past the former Wimbledon champion 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-3.

Kvitova was in control of the match after going 4-0 up in the first set. Zhang, though, reeled off five successive games to take a 5-4 lead.

The set went to a tiebreak, where it was Kvitova who had two points to clinch it at 6-4 in front. However, Zhang took four straight points to take the tiebreak and move in front in the match.

Zhang continued that momentum into a 5-3 second set lead, but then it was Kvitova's turn to rally, and the Czech captured four straight games to force a decider.

Like the entire match, the third set was up and down, with Zhang winning the first three games, losing the next three and then winning three in a row once again for a triumph that lasted two hours and 35 minutes.
